Mehvish Safdar, a collegiate pickleball player and former D1 tennis player, has become one of Collegiate Pickleball's top competitors. While studying sport psychology at Indiana University, she secured two first-place trophies at the 2024 College Individual National Championship (CINC).
Learn more about her insights and advice below! (Responses were transcribed from a video interview and edited by Charles Smith.)
I started playing competitive tennis at a very young age —some might say I was born with a racket in hand. I'm the youngest of three girls, and they both played. I just picked it up in the park and then played with my sisters. Others recognized some potential in me, highlighting that it was something that was worth continuing to pursue.
I had a difficult time transitioning out of tennis because it was such a big part of my life. Then pretty soon after I found pickleball, which was great because it was something new, but familiar. I felt I was able to pick it up pretty quickly. The tennis background helps you be a decent pickleball player, but it’s not enough to be a great pickleball player. I actually think that my tennis background helped me and hurt me. It helped me with the basics, but I've had to unlearn a lot of tennis tendencies that have hurt me in pickleball.
I've actually had the opportunity through my schooling and training to work with collegiate athletes on mental performance. I think a couple things that I would say have been helpful for me and have often been helpful for athletes include going into practice or even competition and looking at it as a positive opportunity. So an opportunity to compete, exercise, have fun, and implement the things that you've been working on. I think that it can be helpful to take a step back and have perspective. It is just a game and the sun will rise tomorrow. There are a lot of really difficult things going on in the world, and I think having that perspective can really help elite athletes perform at a higher level as well as just enjoy the sport more.

I'm actually working on my dissertation research right now for my PhD program. My focus is helping athletes navigate the transition out of collegiate sports, so it's important to recognize who you are outside of just being an athlete.
The stronger adherence you have to your athletic identity can really hurt you mentally. So recognizing that there's more to you than just being an athlete or recognizing that even those traits or skills that you possess as an athlete can transfer to other aspects of your life can be really helpful when transitioning out of sports, whether it's at a collegiate or professional level.
I think that the ultimate goal is that the research translates into practice in some way. In sport psychology, a lot of the research is based around how we optimize performance outcomes on various psychological or mental skills.
I'm also trying to bring an emphasis to how we can help athletes transition out of sports. For my dissertation, I'm trying to look into programming specifically that will help athletes have an easier transition out of collegiate athletics. There's a lot of research on the challenges that student athletes will experience, but there's not a ton of research on how we take those results and then create programming that will actually help them with the issue.
I could have really used someone like my current self or any sport psychology consultant or mental performance coach when I was a college student athlete. I think even if you're not engaged in traditional programming or if programming isn't out there to help you transition out of sport, it's really important to lean on your social supports and talk to other former student athletes and normalize that difficult transition.
I was playing for Indiana University (IU), and IU pickleball was born very recently, so we created a competitive team in the fall of 2022. This year was our first showing at the Collegiate Individual Nationals.
I think we had a good showing all around for it being our first time there. It was in Cincinnati, Ohio, which is home for me, so it was extra special. My parents were there and we played at the facility that I started playing tennis at. That was extra cool, and it was a really fun experience.
We got to play a lot of matches within a couple of days: I played 23 matches in two days, which is wild. I had a couple of very bruised toenails after the tournament. Also, I got to meet a lot of new people. Everyone's really friendly at these college tournaments, and DUPR does a great job of creating a very organized environment and also an environment that's just fun and friendly. DUPR also takes very good care of the athletes too.
Our team had a few coaches there: Timber Tucker, Courtney and Kirby Shedd. They all volunteered their time and energy to help grow the IU pickleball team and support collegiate pickleball. That was great having them there. I got two titles while I was there which was exciting, and I got to make some money along the way. It was a really great weekend overall!

Valentin Debouche, Executive Director at Osaka World USA, shares insights on the company's strategic partnership with DUPR and their exciting entry into the rapidly growing pickleball market, emphasizing community building and appealing to collegiate athletes.
There are two things that immediately connected DUPR and Osaka: a sense of passion and community.
Meeting Ben and Tito, we realized that DUPR was heavily invested in the growth and legitimacy of the sport in the US. They are present on all fronts and are always looking for more initiatives to be involved with. For a brand like Osaka entering a new space with pickleball, this is what you look for in partners.
The DUPR team’s excitement for what is to come in pickleball has been infectious. We hope that the collaboration between DUPR and Osaka brings many successes, building up from Collegiate Pickleball to more joint ventures in the future.
Since 2022, it has been clear that Osaka will eventually enter the pickleball market. With 38M players in the US and a 40% increase in new members YoY, it has become the fastest growing sport in the US by a mile.
For those who do not know Osaka, we can be considered as an up-and-coming brand for up-and-coming sports. We believe that passion for a sports brand comes from the right balance between fashion and function. People are not just looking for a high performing racquet or paddle anymore. They are always on the lookout for what is going to become the next cool thing. This is what we believe to be our edge at Osaka, where we have had a central focus on stylish, contemporary, and unique designs.
With pickleball, we aim to have the same success as with other sports, by bringing a lifestyle approach paired with top-of-the-line equipment. We are ready to take on this great challenge.
With this partnership, we hope to bring brand awareness and gain more exposure to the pickleball market, reach a large audience, and connect with players at events nationwide.
The collegiate events part of this partnership is particularly important to us. A successful strategy for the Osaka team has been to focus on activations at events and connect with players by providing them with a distinct experience. First impressions matter. Being able to display your brand and what you stand for in front of thousands is an opportunity we could not pass on. There is no better way to get a positive momentum with the people you connect with.
Once we have established that first connection with the players, we accompany them throughout their development. We are there every step of the way and can give them access to high-performance equipment from entry-level to elite. And because of our lifestyle approach, we are constantly developing more collections to appeal to our young and older customers and give them that sense of community.
We look forward to attending our first DUPR events. To all college players, you are in for a treat!
‘Why fit in when you were born to stand out?'
This has been at the core of everything we do at Osaka. On top of the unique design identity, one of our key strengths is to adopt a lifestyle approach to all our sports. We recognize that people are not just playing a sport for the health benefits of it. People have a need to be a part of a community. And that is exactly who we want to target in the marketing of our brand. Once you give an athlete a sense of belonging through your brand, they will stay loyal to you.
We hope to bring this sense of community to all the collegiate players we will meet and interact with during our partnership with DUPR. We hope to bring them a new brand that will appeal to them and stand out from the masses.
Collegiate athletes represent the strongest segment of our customer base. They sit at the forefront when it comes to adopting unique brands, new products and embracing new innovations. They are the disruptors we hope to collaborate with to bring our brand to new heights.
As the sport grows in popularity and professionalizes itself, college players will become the next (inter)national athletes and ambassadors for our brand.

Old Coast Pickleball Club (OCP), owned by CourtReserve co-founders Tim and Ashley Owens, was created with a vision to provide a top-tier indoor pickleball experience in the North-East Florida region.
Opening its doors on April 26, 2024, it has quickly grown into a popular destination in the St. Augustine sports community, recognized for its innovative approach to member engagement and competitive play.
From the outset, Tim and Ashley had a clear vision for OCP: to cultivate a thriving community of pickleball enthusiasts while ensuring a fair and competitive playing environment.
However, achieving this balance proved challenging, especially as the club grew and attracted players with varying skill levels. This was a mission shared by club director, Jack Johnson.
“Many of our members were looking for more than just a place to play; they wanted a way to measure their progress and ensure they were competing on a level playing field.”
- Jack Johnson, Director, Old Coast Pickleball Club
Recognizing the need for a standardized rating system, OCP turned to the Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR) system. Despite the customizable options available within CourtReserve, Tim and Ashley chose DUPR for its wide acceptance and objective metrics.
“DUPR provides a universally recognized rating system that our members trust,” says Tim. “It was the perfect solution to foster fair competition and encourage player improvement.”
The simplicity of the DUPR registration process was also a key factor. “It’s easy for players to sign up for a DUPR account for free. The process is straightforward, and members can start seeing their ratings improve as they participate in events," Jack adds.

Integrating DUPR with CourtReserve was a pivotal step in enhancing the club's value to members.
"The integration process was smoother than we anticipated," says Jack. “CourtReserve’s support team was instrumental in addressing the few challenges we faced, mainly aligning the systems to ensure accurate data transfer.”
By implementing DUPR, OCP could objectively rank players, providing them with clear goals and the opportunity to “level up.” This system not only attracted new members but also kept existing ones engaged, contributing to the club’s outstanding retention rate.
Each game is pre-arranged and carefully timed, ensuring equal playtime for all participants. With a maximum of 10 players, there’s equal court time to hone skills. Plus, all scores are submitted to DUPR, helping players establish and improve their rating for future competitive events. It’s a perfect mix of play and competition.
Since integrating DUPR, member engagement at OCP has soared.
“Our members love that they can count on getting good games, thanks to DUPR and CourtReserve,” Jack explains. “Knowing they’ll be matched with players of similar skill levels has made them more willing to invest in their membership and even fork out extra dollars for lessons.”
Feedback from members has been enthusiastic, with many praising the transparency and fairness of the rating system. “It’s really added value to their experience,” Jack adds.
“Our 100% retention rate speaks volumes,” Jack concludes. For other club owners considering DUPR, my advice is simple—do it. The impact on member satisfaction and operational efficiency is undeniable.” - Jack Johnson, Director, Old Coast Pickleball Club
The integration of DUPR with CourtReserve has also streamlined operations at OCP. Event organization, member scheduling, and tournament management have become more efficient, allowing the club to focus on growth and member satisfaction.
“Since implementing DUPR, we’ve seen an increase in event participation and have successfully launched programs that cater to all levels of play,” Jack notes. “The objective nature of DUPR has minimized egos and subjective opinions, creating a more welcoming atmosphere.”
DUPR has not only enhanced the competitive environment at OCP but also strengthened the club’s community.
“The system has brought members closer together; I literally watch the camaraderie as they compete and improve their skills,” Jack says
“It’s amazing to see how DUPR has helped build a stronger, more connected community within our club.”
OCP’s strategic adoption of DUPR has led to exceptional results. Not only has the club maintained a 100% retention rate since its launch, but it has also seen significant growth in membership and event participation.
“Members appreciate that they can count on playing with others at their level, which is why they stay,” says Jack. “DUPR has been a key factor in our success.”
Looking forward, OCP plans to continue leveraging the strengths of CourtReserve and DUPR. With plans to expand programming and open a new 12-court facility in 2025, the club is poised for even greater success.
“Our 100% retention rate speaks volumes,” Jack concludes. “For other club owners considering DUPR, my advice is simple—do it. The impact on member satisfaction and operational efficiency is undeniable.”
“Our members love that they can count on getting good games, thanks to DUPR and CourtReserve.”
