More Dynamic Ratings for Active Players

Some active players have reached a point where their new matches aren’t impacting their ratings enough, so we’ve made an adjustment to the algorithm to allow for more movement with each match.

Following our initial update at the end of October 2024, this adjustment is another step toward ensuring your rating keeps up with your performance.

 Rally Scoring Differentiation

Rally scoring matches often have closer scores compared to traditional scoring. To reflect this, we’ve refined the win intensity formula to reward performance more fairly in rally scoring games.

 A Boost to Your Ratings

With these algorithm improvements, all matches have been recalculated. You might notice a slight increase in your Doubles and/or Singles rating! While your match-by-match history stays the same, your overall rating now better reflects your play.

D.C. Pickleball Team and Down the Line Sports Center Partner on Groundbreaking Initiative for Local Amateur Pickleball Players launching Road to Minors (RTM) Tournament Series

New Program to Give Opportunity for D.C.-Area Players to Earn Spots On DCPT’s Minor League Pickleball Team Rosters

Washington, D.C. – January 13, 2025 – Major League Pickleball’s (MLP) D.C. Pickleball Team (DCPT), Down the Line Sports Center (DTL), Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR), and Pickleball Drop Shop (PDS) have partnered to announce the launch of a first-of-its-kind pathway for amateur pickleball players: Road to Minors (RTM) Tournament Series.

The RTM Tournament Series is the first-ever year-round program designed to identify and cultivate local talent to ladder up to D.C. Pickleball Team’s Minor League Pickleball rosters.

‍

All events will be hosted exclusively by Down the Line Sports Center, where players will participate in DUPR sessions and monthly tournaments to earn points in an effort to qualify for DCPT’s MiLP DUPR 12 to 22 rosters. Weekly DUPR sessions begin Friday, January 31, and the first tournament kicks off Friday, February 28.

This initiative marks a significant milestone for pickleball enthusiasts, providing a structured pathway to elevate their game, compete at a higher level, and engage with D.C. Pickleball Team’s leading coaches and talent evaluators.

How It Works

• RTM DUPR Sessions: Participants must complete a minimum number of RTM DUPR sessions to ensure accurate ratings and fair competition. All sessions will be offered weekly, starting Friday, January 31, at Down the Line Sports Center in Fairfax, Virginia. Events will move to the new state-of-the-art Annandale facility when it opens this Summer. This local focus reflects DCPT and DTL’s shared commitment to fostering talent within the DMV community.
• Tracking Progress: Player performance will be monitored via DUPR and Pickleballbrackets, ensuring transparent and accurate tracking of scores and progress. This system enables participants and the DC Pickleball Team to effectively evaluate top players throughout the year.
• Monthly RTM Tournaments & Wildcard Opportunities: Beginning in February, RTM tournaments will feature men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles at DUPR levels ranging from 3.0 to open division. Points will be awarded to the top four teams in each division. In addition to monthly tournaments, players will have opportunities to enhance their profiles and impress DCPT scouts through special combines and mini-tournaments throughout the year.
• Year-End RTM Cup: The series will culminate in an MiLP-format tournament, where top players will showcase their skills in front of DCPT ownership and coaching staff for potential Minor League roster spots and an opportunity to represent the team at The Dink MiLP Nationals in December.
• Unique Giveaways at all the events there will be unique giveaways for participants including RTM branded shirts provided by RTM’s Official Retail Partner, Pickleball Drop Shop, and other brands. The first round giveaway sponsor, Paddletek, will provide each RTM first round winner a Paddletek paddle. Limited edition Helios arm sleeves will also be provided.

When it comes to unique places to play pickleball, Lieutenant Colonel Jared Wood might just take the crown. The Air Force veteran recently made waves on social media when he posted a video of himself playing pickleball in Antarctica, trading the usual court surface for packed snow and ice. While the conditions weren't exactly regulation – there wasn't even a net – the video captured the imagination of pickleball enthusiasts worldwide and highlighted just how far the sport has spread.

For Wood, who is stationed near Tacoma, Washington, the journey to becoming a pickleball ambassador in one of Earth's most remote locations began with a simple Father's Day gift in 2024. His daughters gave him a starter pickleball set from Target, and what started as a casual introduction to the sport quickly developed into a passionate pursuit. With a background in tennis, Wood found himself naturally drawn to the game's familiar yet distinct mechanics.

From Military Aviation to Antarctic Pickleball

As Director of Operations for the Air Force's Antarctica mission supporting the National Science Foundation, Wood's path to playing pickleball at McMurdo Station was anything but typical. His role involves coordinating C-17 flights from Christchurch, New Zealand, to Antarctica, and transporting scientists, support personnel, and essential equipment to the research station. The mission represents a crucial partnership between military aviation and scientific research, ensuring that vital studies can continue in one of the world's most challenging environments.

The Antarctic video wasn't exactly a planned exhibition match. Wood and a fellow service member ventured onto the parking apron, where the surface was relatively flat and compact. Despite temperatures hovering around five degrees Fahrenheit and the absence of a net, they managed to rally back and forth, though Wood admits with a laugh that there wasn't much dinking involved – mostly lobs.

"Next time I think we probably need to put up a net," Wood said. "You know, that would make it a little more legit."

‍

The extreme conditions required careful preparation, with players donning multiple layers of specialized cold-weather gear. Wood explained that in Antarctica, even your eyes need protection.

‍

"You've got to make sure that you have goggles on, because your eyes literally will freeze open because it's so cold,” he stressed.

Finding a Pickleball Community Abroad

‍

While his Antarctic pickleball adventure gained attention, Wood's regular pickleball routine actually blossomed during his time in New Zealand. The owner of their hotel in Christchurch, upon learning about the team's enthusiasm for pickleball, converted his tennis court into two pickleball courts. This thoughtful adaptation allowed Wood and his fellow service members to play almost daily during their stays.

"We played almost every day," Wood recalled. "And then in Christchurch, there's a local pickleball group where they have indoor sessions, and when the weather turns nice, they go outdoors. It's an up-and-coming pickleball locale in New Zealand."

Strengthening Military Bonds Through Pickleball

As both an active Air Force Reserve pilot and a veteran of 10 years of active duty service, Wood sees tremendous potential for pickleball to bring together service members and veterans. The sport's accessibility and social nature make it an ideal platform for building connections within the military community.

"Anytime that you have people that have served, veterans... one thing they like to do is, especially when you're waiting for a game, they just love to talk about their time," Wood explained. "If they know that you're a veteran, they love to share their stories and their experiences and just kind of talk about their service."

Wood believes a veterans-based pickleball league would be highly successful, citing the unspoken camaraderie that naturally emerges when veterans connect and share their experiences.

‍

"It would be a great way for veterans to kind of bond and to lead not only into pickleball, but then also talk about life. Any issues that veterans have, they can find someone to have an ally in,” Wood shared.

‍

For active duty service members considering picking up a paddle, Wood emphasizes the natural fit between military values and pickleball culture.

‍

"Being a service member, staying fit, being competitive, right? Those are important things," he notes. "And for those of us that maybe don't have the chops to play tennis anymore like we used to, pickleball is a nice way to downshift."

Bringing Pickleball to Military Bases and Beyond

When he's not flying C-17s or playing pickleball in extreme conditions, Wood keeps busy with various pursuits. He works as a simulator instructor for Air Force pilots and runs a youth basketball league with 150 teams in the East Seattle metro area. A native of Central Washington, he embraces the outdoor lifestyle of the Pacific Northwest, enjoying activities like skiing, camping, and mountain biking.

Looking ahead, Wood envisions pickleball continuing to grow within military communities, both on and off base. He sees potential for partnerships between pickleball organizations like DUPR and Military Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs to help facilitate this growth, suggesting that existing tennis court infrastructure could be converted to support the rising interest in pickleball among service members.

These initiatives mark a significant step forward in the Shock’s mission to expand its footprint in all levels of professional and amateur pickleball, while fostering talent development and the pursuing championship culture.

The formation of multiple Shock MiLP teams makes the Shock the first MLP franchise to build an official presence in Minor League Pickleball. This initiative will launch with teams competing in multiple MiLP DUPR levels, creating a pathway for emerging players to refine their skills, compete under the Shock brand, and rise to the professional ranks of one of the league’s top franchises. The Shock plan to expand the program to encompass all MiLP DUPR levels, and establish a comprehensive

network of players and fans – all united under the Shock banner.

John is a Senior Pro Player and nationally recognized competitor, who has won Gold at the highest levels, including multiple medal finishes at the Pickleball US Open. Kleinschmidt is also a IPTPA Level 2 and NPA Certified Instructor with over six years of coaching experience.

DUPR calculates your rating based on your performance in matches — factoring in the score, match recency, and match type. Your Reliability Score increases the more you play! Learn more about the algorithm.

📈 Rating Scale:

‍All new players start as NR (Not Rated) and progress through a scale ranging from 2.000 to 8.000. Your rating updates automatically every time a result is shared.

💯Reliability Score: ‍

The Reliability Score shows your progress toward achieving a reliable rating — a low reliability score means your data is outdated or insufficient. To keep your rating up to date, play often and log matches consistently. A higher Reliability Score means your DUPR Rating is more likely to reflect your current skill level.

• Algo Updates: To start the year 2024, we updated the algorithm to consider match count, match recency, win intensity and improve initial ratings.
  
  
• Reliability: We launched the Reliability Score, giving players a new way to measure how active and consistent they’ve been in shaping their DUPR rating. Clubs can choose what level of reliability score they wish to mandate for participation in events.

• Feeds: The new Feeds feature allows users to share photos and updates directly on the platform, fostering greater connection within the community.
  

• Partner Platforms: We’ve strengthened our integrations with partner platforms to seamlessly import tournaments and match data from Pickleballtournaments.com, Pickleball Brackets, and many others. Additionally, we have incorporated historical data from these partners into the DUPR ratings.
