Five dreambreakers. Five wins for Utah Valley teams. That’s the story of the Utah Super Regional, and it’s why Utah Valley University heads to The Nationals as a champion.
The first stop of the 2026/27 College Pickleball Tour season brought the strongest region in college pickleball to Premier Pickleball Club in Herriman, Utah, on October 3. Three bids to The Nationals and $6,000 in prize money were on the line. Here’s how it played out.
A first for the Utah Super Regional
This was the first one-day Super Regional in CPT history, and the field made every hour count. Utah is home to four of the top 11 college teams in the country, so nobody had an easy path through the bracket.
BYU came deep. The Cougars brought six teams, the most they’ve ever sent to a CPT event. Pool play seeded teams into a single-elimination bracket, and from there, every match was win or go home.

Round of 16 and quarterfinals
Southern Utah University opened the bracket by knocking out BYU 6, 3-1. The University of Utah handled UVU Black 3-0.
The quarterfinals got tight. Southern Utah took men’s doubles 22-20, but Utah Tech closed out the match 3-1.
Utah Valley 1 and the University of Utah needed a dreambreaker, the rotating singles tiebreaker played to 21. Utah won a long men’s doubles game 24-22, and its roster features Garret Whitehead, who holds the highest college doubles DUPR in the country at 5.930 as of October 9. Utah Valley answered by taking the dreambreaker 21-15.
Semifinals: BYU locks in a bid
Utah Tech swept BYU 1, 3-0. On the other side, Utah Valley 1 went to another dreambreaker against BYU 2 and won it 21-13.
With two teams in the semifinals, BYU secured the third bid no matter what. Six teams, one bid to The Nationals. For programs deciding how many teams to bring, BYU’s day makes a strong case: more teams means more paths through the bracket.

The final: Utah Valley takes the Utah Super Regional
Utah Valley and Utah Tech met for the title. For the third straight playoff match, Utah Valley went to a dreambreaker. For the third straight time, they won it, 21-15.
Ranked No. 7 nationally [as of DATE], Utah Valley upset No. 6 BYU and No. 2 Utah Tech on the way to the title. Utah Valley teams won all five dreambreakers played at the event.
It’s a rare result for Utah Tech. This is only the second time they haven’t won a Super Regional they entered. The first was the 2024 Utah Super Regional, when they also fell to Utah Valley in the final.
