Inside Riverside, the Calgary pickleball club built on DUPR

“I’m a 4.0 at my club.” You’ve heard it. Then you look up that player’s DUPR and it reads 2.9.
The Riverside Club, a 15-court Calgary pickleball club, decided it was done with that gap. DUPR is the only rating it recognizes, full stop. Here’s how Riverside runs its courts, leagues, and coaching around one objective number, and what that means for the Riverside Cup this November.

A 15-court club built for pickleball first
Riverside isn’t new to Calgary. The club has been a premium racquet and fitness facility for years. What’s new is the focus.
A full renovation is putting pickleball at the center of everything. Riverside soft-launched 8 courts in April 2026, and the final 7 are coming online now, bringing the club to 15 dedicated pickleball courts. Updates to the gym and the rest of the facility are rolling out alongside them.
The full-service side stays. Members still get:
- A gym and fitness classes
- A pool, hot tub, and steam rooms
- A new lounge with 5 beers on tap, protein shakes, and snacks
That lounge matters more than it sounds. “A lot of clubs are transactional: in, play, out,”. “We’re building Riverside to be the opposite of that.” Grab a drink after the league. Answer emails between a drill session and evening play. Stay because you want to, not because you’re waiting on a court.

What makes this Calgary pickleball club different
Riverside’s pitch comes down to one idea: build for the long run instead of squeezing members in year one.
You can see it in the pricing. Unlimited members get free leagues and free tournaments. No 2x court fees for league nights. No surprise charges for tournament play.
You can also see it in how the club handles ratings. Riverside doesn’t run a pay-to-play rating pipeline, the kind where you pay to get rated so you can join a 4-week program so you can enter a rated round robin.
“Your rating at Riverside is your DUPR,”. “It’s objective, it’s portable, and it doesn’t depend on how many lessons you bought or who you know.”
That doesn’t mean Riverside skips coaching. Its clinics and programs fill up regularly. The difference is what’s on offer. “We sell actual skill development, not the promise of a 4.0 at the end,”. “You come to get better, and your DUPR takes care of itself as you improve.”
Club rating vs DUPR: why Riverside chose one number
Riverside doesn’t issue subjective club ratings at all. We have a DUPR Coach and run proper DUPR rating sessions, so new and unrated players enter the system accurately from day one.
The reason is a gap the club has seen up close. In my experience, the difference between a club rating and a player’s DUPR averages about a full point, sometimes more.
“Club ratings feel good because they’re subjective,”. “Your progress is whatever someone tells you it is. DUPR gives you real results.”
DUPR+ adds another layer. Its AI-powered insights give players data-driven feedback on their actual game instead of opinions.

A rating that travels with you
A club rating only means something inside that club’s walls. Some clubs accept other clubs’ ratings. Many don’t. A universal rating works differently. A 4.2 is a 4.2 in Calgary, Toronto, Phoenix, or Paris. Riverside members can be on vacation in Ho Chi Minh City or Panama and walk straight into competitive play.
“Go to Denmark and tell them you’ve got a 4.0 rating at your local club,”. “Nobody will care.” That shared standard is what lets the sport grow from a set of local scenes into an organized one. It’s also, in Riverside’s view, better business. Rated open plays and rated leagues give members a better experience, and members who have a better experience stay.
The Riverside Cup: a DUPR rated tournament built for fair matches
Before Riverside, we ran a combined-DUPR event at another Calgary facility. No traditional 3.5 or 4.0 brackets. Just divisions built from real DUPR data with a tight rating spread.
“It was a wild success,”. “Every match was competitive. Nobody getting blown out, nobody coasting.” No playing up, no playing down, and no sandbagging debates.
The Riverside Cup brings that format back, bigger, from November 20 to 22:
- $5,000 guaranteed cash across every division, not just the top bracket
- Divisions built from combined DUPR with a maximum 1.50 spread
- Six teams per division as the target, round robin into playoffs
- Every match submitted to DUPR
- Referees on all playoff matches
Whether you’re a 2.5 or a 5.5, you get a fair division and a real shot at cash. You couldn’t run this format on subjective ratings.
Early, not late
Over the last two years, Riverside has watched non-DUPR tournaments in Alberta pull weak registrations next to DUPR rated events. Players have noticed which format gives them fair matches.
“Eventually every club moves to DUPR,”. “The only question is whether you’re early or late. We’d rather be early.”
If you’re in Calgary, come see what a club built around one honest number feels like. Check your DUPR, register for the Riverside Cup, or find your next DUPR rated event.
