Pickleball doubles rules 2026: How to play & keep score

Four players. One ball. A score that sounds like a locker combination. If you’ve ever wondered why your partner just called out “4-2-1,” you’re not alone.
This guide covers the pickleball doubles rules you need to play a full game: serving, scoring, the two-bounce rule, the kitchen, and the faults that end rallies. It’s updated for the 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook, so whether you’re just learning how to play pickleball or still second-guessing the score, start here.
Pickleball doubles rules at a glance
Here’s the short version of the pickleball rules for doubles, based on the USA Pickleball official rulebook. For a deeper walkthrough, check out DUPR’s Pickleball Rules Summary.
- Serve underhand and diagonally, past the kitchen line.
- Only the serving team scores.
- Both partners serve, except at the start of the game.
- The ball must bounce once on each side before anyone volleys.
- No volleys from the kitchen.
- Play to 11, win by 2.
How to play pickleball: the court
Pickleball mixes tennis, table tennis, and badminton, played with a solid paddle and a plastic ball with holes. It’s often called the fastest growing sport in the U.S., and its short learning curve is a big reason why.
- 20 feet wide and 44 feet long, so four courts fit on one tennis court
- A net 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches at the center
- A kitchen, or non-volley zone, 7 feet deep on each side of the net
- A centerline splitting each side into right and left service courts
The kitchen line counts as part of the kitchen. Use a coin toss or any fair method to decide who serves first.
How to serve in pickleball doubles
Making a legal serve
- Volley serve: Hit the ball out of the air. Under the 2026 rules, contact below your waist, paddle head below your wrist, and an upward swing must all be clearly visible, or a referee can call a fault.
- Drop serve: Drop the ball and hit it after it bounces. You can’t throw it down or toss it up for a higher bounce.
Either way, no pre-spin. You can’t spin the ball before contact, but spin from the paddle is fine. At contact, at least one foot must be on the ground behind the baseline, and neither foot can touch the line.
Serve diagonally into the opposite service court. A serve on the kitchen line is a fault. A serve that clips the net and lands in is in play, since there are no let serves. For more detail, see our full breakdown of pickleball serving rules.
Who serves, and from which side
- Each serving turn starts from the right side.
- When the serving team wins a rally, the server switches sides with their partner and continues serving.
- When they lose a rally, the partner serves next from wherever they’re standing.
- When the second server loses a rally, it’s a side out, and the other team serves.
The receiving team never switches sides. And server 1 isn’t a permanent job: after every side out, whoever is in the right service court serves first.
At the start of the game, the first serving team gets only one server. That’s why every game opens at 0-0-2.
How scoring works in pickleball doubles
Pickleball scoring in doubles uses three numbers, and the server calls them before every serve:
- The serving team’s score
- The receiving team’s score
- The server number, 1 or 2
Here’s how it plays out:
- Team A opens serving. Score: 0-0-2.
- Team A wins the rally. Score: 1-0-2.
- Team A loses the rally. Side out. Score: 0-1-1, Team B serving.
- Team B loses the rally. Partner serves. Score: 0-1-2.
Lost track of positions? When your team’s score is even, the player who started the game on the right should be on the right. When it’s odd, they should be on the left.
Under pickleball doubles rules, a win is a win. DUPR looks deeper and compares your actual score to the expected score, so a close 9-11 loss to a stronger team can still raise your rating.
The two-bounce rule
The receiving team must let the serve bounce, and the serving team must let the return bounce. After that, anyone can volley.
Former tennis players, take note. Serve and rush the net to volley the return, and it’s a fault.
That’s why the serving team starts with both players at the baseline, while the receiving team starts with one player back and one up near the kitchen line.
Kitchen rules: the non-volley zone
New to the term? Start with what the kitchen is in pickleball. Here’s what matters in doubles:
- You can’t volley while touching the kitchen or the kitchen line. Your foot can hover over the line, but not touch it.
- If your momentum carries you into the kitchen after a volley, it’s a fault, even if the ball is dead.
- You can step into the kitchen anytime you’re not volleying, even before a short ball bounces.
- After being in the kitchen, get both feet out before you volley.
How to win a rally: common faults
A fault occurs when a team hits the ball out or into the net, lets it bounce twice, volleys too early or from the kitchen, touches the net, or gets hit by the ball. If the serving team faults, they lose the serve. If the receiving team faults, the serving team scores.
Some of these catch even experienced players. Here are the pickleball rules players commonly get wrong.
2026 pickleball rule changes
- Volley serves must be clearly legal.
- Multiple hits in one continuous, one-direction swing are legal. Carries are still a fault.
- A spare ball that falls on the court, or that opponents can see, is a fault.
- A ball that bounces on your opponents’ side and then hits the net post or another permanent object is your rally.
- Out calls must be prompt, and you can’t ask spectators for help.

Pickleball doubles rules FAQ
Do both players serve in pickleball doubles?
Yes, except during the first serving turn of the game, when only one player serves.
What does 0-0-2 mean in pickleball?
It’s the starting score. Both teams have 0, and the first server serves as server 2, so their team gets only one serving turn.
Can you step into the kitchen before the ball bounces?
Yes. Just don’t volley while you’re in there, and get both feet out before your next volley.
Can you hit the ball twice in pickleball?
Yes, if it happens in one continuous, one-direction swing. Carrying the ball is still a fault.
Do doubles matches count toward my DUPR rating?
Yes. DUPR tracks separate doubles and singles ratings, and club and tournament matches carry the most weight. If you’re new to DUPR, here’s what a DUPR rating is and how it works.
