For Bryce Larson (DUPR 5.701 singles) of Utah Valley University, summer isn’t a time to slow down — it’s a chance to set himself apart by challenging the best. And he’s doing just that by stepping onto the court with some of the top pickleball players in the world.

We caught up with Bryce to learn his secret weapon for staying sharp before the collegiate season kicks off. His approach? Choosing the right tournaments, finding high-DUPR opponents, and pushing himself outside his comfort zone every time he plays.

Fearless on Court: Embracing Challenges

“There’s no better way to improve than competing against some of the best players in the world,” Bryce explained. “Those experiences give me confidence, and I bring that energy straight back into college tournaments.”

For Bryce, these matches aren’t just practice — they’re essential for maintaining and boosting his DUPR rating while sharpening every aspect of his game.

Why Working on His DUPR Rating Matters

So, how important is it for Bryce to keep his DUPR strong during the summer?

“DUPR is the most accurate way to determine a player’s skill and rating,” he said. “Competing against top players in the PPA Challenger and Qualifier events helps me stay on top of my game and fully prepared for the upcoming college season.”

Mindset & Discipline Over Talent

The best athletes know how to perform under pressure — and Bryce thrives in those moments. As Billie Jean King once said, “Pressure is a privilege.” Bryce agrees, and credits these high-stakes matches for building his composure and leadership.

“I can be a leader for my team in big moments because PPA events have already put me in pressure situations and helped me build my composure,” he shared.

Main Motivation: Leading His Team to the Championship

When it comes to his goals, Bryce isn’t holding back.

“My goals for the summer are to keep training and playing against top talent so that when the collegiate season starts, I’m ready to help Utah Valley University remain a powerhouse in the pickleball scene.”

With a mindset focused on growth and a summer packed with elite competition, Bryce isn’t just preparing — he’s raising the standard for what it means to train like a champion. We can’t wait to see how his dedication translates on the court this fall.
