When Pickleland officially opened its doors to the public on August 23, 2024, it was not intended to be simply another place for people to play pickleball. The Pickleland team envisioned creating a club that would fulfill the needs of players in the Austin area who were looking for an indoor pickleball facility that was dependable, well-designed, and community-driven.

Pickleland is a nine-court, fully enclosed, climate-controlled pickleball facility located in Pflugerville, Texas, approximately 15 miles northeast of downtown Austin. Since opening, more than 20,000 players have used the facility.

Built With Player Input

Although Austin has a strong and active pickleball community, one of the best in the United States, several aspects of the local climate can make it difficult to play outdoors consistently during the summer months. Temperatures above 90 degrees and humidity levels of 80% or higher are common during this time and can make outdoor play extremely challenging. Similarly, although less common, severe weather and cold temperatures during the winter months can also affect play.

Indoor recreation centers are available for pickleball, but they often operate on limited schedules and place restrictions on court use. For example, they may limit how long players can rent a court, mark multiple sets of lines on each court, or only allow nets to be set up during certain hours.

Before breaking ground on Pickleland, the founders surveyed more than 130 local pickleball players about their opinions and suggestions regarding both the physical features of the club and its programming options, including leagues, socials, mixers, and lessons.

They also traveled to several top-rated pickleball facilities across the United States to learn which characteristics contributed to each club’s success, or created challenges. As the club evolved from an idea into a reality, the founders continued gathering input from Austin’s growing pickleball community through a Slack group that eventually reached more than 8,000 members.

In short: listen to your customers, design your product around their needs, and then build it.

This philosophy came naturally to Pickleland’s founder because he had followed a similar approach while building Flux Chargers, a consumer electronics company that sold products in more than 75 countries. His focus on understanding customers’ needs helped him build Pickleland with a customer-centric mindset from day one.

Beyond Just Courts

Pickleland is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. Because players do not need to call ahead to confirm whether courts or nets are available, they can enjoy a more reliable and convenient playing experience.

What Makes Pickleland Unique?

Pickleland is independently operated rather than part of a franchise, allowing the team to respond quickly to the community’s requests.

The club currently offers many programs and events that are not commonly available at other facilities, including singles mixers, singles interest groups, 50-plus mixers, homeschool programs, and other special-interest groups. These offerings give members more opportunities to meet like-minded players and build new relationships.

The owner is also directly accessible through Slack, allowing the community to share feedback and have its ideas heard quickly.

Unlike some clubs, Pickleland was built from the ground up rather than developed inside an existing warehouse. As a result, the facility does not have support columns near the courts. It also features professional sports lighting, minimal window glare, fully fenced courts, and adequate spacing between playing areas.

The club could have added more courts to maximize capacity. Instead, the team deliberately prioritized the quality of the player experience.
