Most Creative Shot in Pickleball: The Scorpion

Let’s break down one of the most creative, and satisfying shots in pickleball: The Scorpion.
The Scorpion is an excellent defensive counter against aggressive speed-ups aimed at your shoulders or chest. Usually, these body shots jam players up, forcing an awkward "chicken wing" return. Instead of getting defensive, the Scorpion allows you to turn the tables. By dropping low and extending your paddle, you can strike the ball cleanly at head height or slightly above.
How to Master the Scorpion: 3 Key Elements
1. Own the Kitchen Line
This shot belongs strictly at the kitchen line. Trying to hit a Scorpion when you're pushed back is incredibly difficult. When you pull off the line, the ball drops lower, and your natural paddle preparation drops with it, taking away the high strike zone you need.
2. Read the Upward Trajectory
Anticipation is your biggest asset. The perfect time to deploy the Scorpion is when you catch your opponent attacking a ball from below the net. Because they are striking upward, the ball will naturally rise. Treat that upward arc as your visual cue: drop low, stay compact, and meet the ball right out in front of your face.

3. Keep it Short and Crisp
This is not a full swing. The Scorpion is a compact, punchy shot that thrives on using your opponent’s raw pace against them. If you over-swing or chop down too hard, you’ll dump the ball straight into the net. Keep your wrist locked and stable—breaking your wrist delays contact, which usually sends the ball sailing long.
When timed correctly, the Scorpion effortlessly neutralizes a dangerous body speed-up, converting it into a lethal counterattack aimed right at your opponent's feet.
