Charlie McDowell has built a career on telling stories. As a filmmaker, he's directed The One I Love, The Discovery, Windfall, and The Summer Book, movies that ask big questions about love, identity, and connection. But lately, one of his biggest storylines is happening off-camera: pickleball.

"I'm a filmmaker, writer, and producer who has spent my career telling stories across film and television," Charlie says. "In recent years, I've also become deeply involved in the growth of pickleball, both as a competitive player and an advocate for the sport."

It's a natural fit for someone who's always been drawn to bringing people together. "I enjoy building communities around the things I'm passionate about, whether that's storytelling, sports, or bringing people together through shared experiences."

A Family Man First

Away from set and off the court, Charlie keeps it simple. "I'm a husband, father, and lifelong sports enthusiast. I love spending time with my family, traveling, and exploring new creative projects."

That competitive streak isn't new. "Competition has always been a big part of my life, which is one reason pickleball appealed to me so quickly," he says. "Outside of work, I'm happiest when I'm on a court, behind a camera, or sharing a meal with friends and family."

How Pickleball Became an Obsession

Like most players, Charlie's introduction came through friends, and it didn't take long to hook him. "What started as a casual game quickly became an obsession because it combines strategy, athleticism, and social connection in a way that few sports do."

What sealed it was the sport's accessibility. "I loved that players of different ages and backgrounds could compete together. Before long, I was playing a few days a week and looking for tournaments wherever I traveled."

Building Pickleball's Future in Europe

Charlie now lives in London, where he's putting his storytelling instincts to work growing the sport from the ground up. "My goal is to help raise awareness of pickleball and introduce it to people who may not have experienced it yet," he explains. "That includes supporting events, connecting players and organizers, creating content around the sport, and helping bring more visibility to pickleball through media and storytelling."

He sees the timing as a real advantage. "Europe is still in the early stages of pickleball's growth compared to the U.S., which makes it an exciting time to be involved. There's enormous potential for participation and community building across the continent."

Right now, infrastructure is the priority. "A major focus right now is establishing permanent courts in Europe's larger cities, including London, where I live."

The Family Connection to Pickleball's Next Big Movie

Pickleball fans have likely heard buzz about an upcoming film featuring the sport, and Charlie has a personal stake in it. "My only involvement is that my mom is the lead actress in the film, and I guess introducing her to pickleball and encouraging her to play," he says. "Outside of that, I'm just a fan of the movie and excited for people to see it."

He's confident it'll resonate with the community. "It's a lot of fun, and my mom's character brings real heart to the story. I think pickleball players will love it, and I wouldn't be surprised if it helps the sport continue to grow."

And his mom's pickleball journey didn't start until the film brought her to the sport. "She played a little bit before, but I'd say she really caught the 'pickleball bug' while making the film," Charlie says. "She doesn't have a tennis background and has never really played a racquet sport, so pickleball was all pretty new to her. But she loves it and is improving every day."

Chasing a Higher DUPR Rating

Like every serious player, Charlie keeps close tabs on his rating. "My DUPR rating is currently 4.35, hopefully it doesn't go down after my last tournament," he laughs.

What's Next: Tournaments, Courts, and a New Film

Looking ahead six months, Charlie's goals span both sides of his life. "I'd like to continue improving my game and help create more opportunities for pickleball growth throughout Europe," he says. "I'm playing in the English Open in August, where my partner and I won a silver medal in men's doubles last year, so I'm hoping to make another run this year."

Filmmaking is never far from his mind, either. "I'm also excited about continuing my filmmaking work and finding ways to connect storytelling with the sports and communities I'm passionate about. If I can help bring new players into the game while improving my own level, I'll consider that a success."

His next project might even blend both worlds. "I'm putting together my next movie, which I hope to film in Europe sometime next year," he says. "One of my first questions whenever I travel for work these days is: 'Is there a pickleball community nearby?' So that will be important wherever I end up shooting the movie."
