Navigating Pro Pickleball and Motherhood
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, we recognize the women in professional pickleball who balance the demands of competition with the responsibilities of motherhood. The life of a professional pickleball player is a complex logistical puzzle, demanding that elite athletes navigate a complex schedule of over 20 annual tournaments while spending the majority of the year on the road.
The Professional Balancing Act
For mothers on the tour, every tournament is a masterclass in coordination. Players like Brooke Buckner, Callie Smith, and Allyce Jones exhibit incredible discipline, often training at sunrise to maximize family time before the next flight. Similarly, Lindsey Newman and Lina Padegimaite have mastered efficiency, prioritizing high-quality, intentional practice to maintain their elite rankings while raising young children.
This dynamic comes to life in the lives of Megan Fudge and her husband, Ryler DeHeart. As a dual-professional pickleball couple, they navigate the tour together, yet Ryler is the first to point out the extraordinary effort Megan puts in. “As amazing of a pickleball player Megan is, she is an even more amazing mother! It’s no surprise why we affectionately call her ‘Wonder Woman,’” Ryler shared, highlighting his admiration for her ability to compete at the sport's elite level while continuing to prioritize her family.

These mothers are redefining the dual-career athlete by bringing the same agility they show in a main draw match back home to their families. By sharing the court with their children, they are actively coaching and inspiring the very generation that will one day lead the sport.
From Parenting to Professional Coaching
Some of the most influential coaches on tour are mothers who have transitioned from the court to the sidelines to coach.
Both Julie Johnson and Leigh Waters have created the blueprint for how parental support drives professional success, and they are immensely proud to watch their children compete at the highest level. As former top competitors themselves, they shifted their focus to lead the careers of the sport's most dominant young players. Julie serves as the foundation for JW and Jorja Johnson, refining their strategy and mechanics while managing the emotional and logistical weight of the tour. Similarly, Leigh operates as the primary strategist for Anna Leigh Waters, focusing on technical discipline and mid-match adjustments. Her transition from Anna Leigh's doubles partner to full-time coach has solidified one of the most successful partnerships in the history of the sport.

A Game That Brings Us Together
Beyond the trophies and the pickleball rankings, the true power of pickleball is its ability to bring people together. It is a rare sport where a mother and child can share the same court, speak the same language of strategy, and build a bond through competition. Whether it’s a pro player traveling with her family in an RV or a mother coaching from the sidelines, pickleball creates a unique space for connection that few other sports can match.
DUPR wants to recognize the immense amount these professional pickleball mothers give to their families, and to the growth of pro pickleball. To all the professional pickleball mothers, players, and coaches who make this community what it is: Happy Mother’s Day.
